Game Review
Silent Hunter is submarine simulation developed by Aeon Electronic and published by Strategic Simulations in 1996 for PC MS-DOS only.
This World War II submarine combat sim was created mostly by William T. Becker (programmer) and Kim Biscoe (artist). You are a commander of a U.S. submarine during the end of the war (after Pearl Harbor) and your task is simple: sink as many ships as possible. You can either play historical missions or random encounters, but of course the career mode is the most interesting. Submarines, ships and weapons reflect what was available at the time, making the game very realistic.
Silent Hunter was a success, with more than 300k units sold and very favorable reviews. You can't miss it, especially if you love war simulations.

The idea of Silent Hunter 2 is that you are in control of a WWII German U-Boat. I thought this was a very clever idea and something I have not experienced too much in a game before. Originally released in 2001, this was a fairly modest hit in that it did not exactly light up the sales charts, but those who played the game enjoyed how authentic it tried to be.
Aye, Aye Captain
There is a single-player campaign here that sees you being the captain of a really badass looking U-Boat. You are tasked with making sure the war goes your way and you have a ton of missions that you need to do. Many of these missions are based on real-life battles that help give Silent Hunter 2 that bit of authenticity that history buffs will love.
For example, you can try and swing the Battle of the Atlantic in your favor. The game will have you going to many different places as well such as the Caribbean and Mediterranean seas.
Making The Right Choices

What I struggled with was that you literally are in charge of every aspect of the ship. This ranges from the navigation to the engine room to the torpedoes as well. You have many things that you need to keep an eye on and pretty much every decision that is needed to be made on this U-Boat is down to you. If you are into this kind of thing, I am sure this is great for those like me, who nothing about this kind of stuff it can be rather daunting.
The game is played from a 2D perspective and all of the screens are just 2D images. This kind of takes away the immersion from the game, but I feel that for the time this was really the only way they could have made the game happen. As well as the campaign, you can also do single-missions, create your own missions and there is even a multiplayer component to the game also.
Where Is The Movie Magic?
What I feel makes Silent Hunter 2 a game that you have to be into this kind of stuff to truly appreciate is the lack of flair and even polish when it comes to the presentation. I already touched on the way the main aspects of the game are 2D, but everything else in the game is very barebones in terms of its presentation. The sound is pretty awesome though as it is very ambient and can make things that extra bit nerve-wracking as you play.
I have to say that this is the kind of game that is not going to be for everyone. I loved the idea of being a U-Boat captain and the WWII authenticity is something I thought was really cool. However, I do feel that Silent Hunter 2 was a bit above my understanding of this kind of thing. I was able to get my way through some of the missions, but I feel that you have to have a real interest in U-Boats and this kind of thing in general to have a real appreciation for this game.
